Al-Shabaab, the al-Qaeda-affiliated terrorist group, has used IEDs concealed in laptops in a number of attacks it has conducted in Somalia, including two this year. The most recent attacks, both targeting Somali civilian aviation, underscore the group's continued predilection toward this IED concealment TTP. While laptops are packed full of electronic components leaving little room to conceal explosives unless hardware is removed, the laptop's interior design makes it difficult for conventional screening systems to detect any concealed objects. In employing this concealment TTP, al-Shabaab seeks to exploit rudimentary screening systems in Somalia and, given its "successes," is likely to continue to favor the TTP in the future until rendered ineffective by countermeasures.
