In late June 2016, Libyan government forces succeeded in ousting the Islamic State from the strategic Libyan port city of Sirte. An abandoned IS workshop containing IEDs, IED components, explosives and assorted components for IED initiation systems was discovered after IS retreated from the city.
A sizable quantity of artillery rounds appears to have been the main source of explosives in the workshop. Some had their explosive contents removed for use in IEDs of a specific configuration, while others were repurposed "as is" into IEDs, with the addition of a little plastic explosive and a short length of detonating cord.
