Syrian Forces Seize Islamic State Tire IEDs at Tadmur Military Airbase

May 4, 2016

At the end of March 2016, the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) and pro-government forces recaptured Tadmur military airbase from the Islamic State (IS). Among the standard weapons seized, including mortars and AT mines, were four tire IEDs, the first such devices configured in this fashion to be documented in an area where IS operates. The design demonstrates IS efforts to innovate, refine and develop its IED capabilities, and offers several potential methods for employment, including camouflage in a tire in a roadblock, or as part of a device that can be rolled toward a target.
