The In Focus section of this report examines the strategy of jihadi movements (mainly the Islamic State) in inciting lone wolf attacks, focusing on and drawing conclusions from the two recent attacks in Orlando, Florida, and near Paris, France. While both attackers pledged allegiance to the Islamic State, an examination of their profiles highlights key differences between the two cases.
The report also includes an analysis of the main events currently under discussion in the online jihadi community and a Who's Who section highlighting the profile of Abu Omar al-Maaldifi, a Maldivian fighter with the Syrian AQ branch of Jabhat al-Nusra. Al-Maaldifi is part of a network of Maldivian activists that encourages Maldivian citizens to make hijra and join jihad.
