In late May 2016, Yemeni sources published images of a water-borne improvised explosive device (WBIED) recovered by Yemen Army and Southern Resistance fighters operating in al-Mukalla, Yemen. The seizure of the WBIED, among other IEDs and weapons, from an area previously controlled by al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), suggests the group seeks to develop its maritime attack TTPs, building off of the failures and successes of its predecessor organization in the country. However, the available documentation of the WBIED provides an incomplete picture of the device, raising more questions than answers. Nevertheless, the attempt to improve its WBIED capabilities and maritime attack TTPs is notable, and, should it become more advanced, will pose a significant threat to both military and civilian vessels.
