On December 13, 2021, an IED initiated at a Russian Orthodox school in the town of Serpukhov, in Moscow Oblast. A former student of the Vvedenskiy Vladychny Gymnasium and 10 other students were seriously injured in the blast. The IED was brought to the scene by the former student, with the intention of carrying out an attack on the school grounds. He was also armed with a machete. It is possible the premature blast, at the entrance to the school’s sports hall, was a ‘work accident.’ In a search of the attack perpetrator’s home, firearms and IED components were seized. Incidents involving attacks on schools by youths armed with firearms and IEDs have become a widespread phenomenon in Russia in recent years.
