Mobius report 64/2022 – Series of Timed IED and IID Attacks, Southern Thailand

Between the night of August 16, 2022, and early on August 17, 2022, a series of approximately 17 timed IED and IID attacks took place throughout southern Thailand. The attacks targeted 11 different districts in three provinces – Pattani, Narathiwat and Yala – and focused on convenience stores and ATMs at gas stations, and in one case, a cellular communication station. In the various incidents, both IEDs and IIDs were used, and in at least one case, the contents of a convenience store were set on fire manually by the militants. Two IEDs that failed to initiate at the planned time were defused in two different locations in Pattani and Narathiwat provinces. The IEDs were near-identical, and were both connected to identical initiation systems based on modified commercial digital timers that have just recently started to be used by the armed militants in southern Thailand. Timed attacks that include setting fire to shopping centers is a well-known TTP in the local fighting scene, favored in particular by the Barisan Revolusi Nasional Melayu Patani organization, who also claimed responsibility for the recent events.
