Mobius report 71/2022 – Houthi Sea Mines and Anti-Ship Missiles Displayed in Military Parade, Yemen

On September 1, 2022, the Ansar Allah Movement (Houthis) held a largescale military parade in open terrain near the city of Al-Hodeidah, situated in Al-Hodeidah Governorate, on Yemen’s western coast. The parade marked the training graduation ceremony of new batches of fighters for several military brigades, including the Houthi naval forces. In the presence of thousands of participating troops, an assortment of weapon systems attributed to these brigades were showcased, the majority of which were conventional or commercial, with others improvised, including various anti-tank and anti-personnel weapons; UAVs; improvised rocket-assisted munitions; and anti-vehicle and anti-personnel mines. The highlight of the parade was the part dedicated to weapons used by the naval forces, mainly active near Al-Hodeidah’s Red Sea shores and waters, with several models of sea mines and anti-ship missiles exhibited. Of these, only a few are familiar from past use by the organization; some were unveiled in a 2021 exhibition, while others were shown for the first time. This display of strength, one of the latest in a series of parades held by the Houthis over the past two months to showcase their military might, is notable against the backdrop of an ongoing ceasefire and attempted negotiations between the fighting parties involved in the Yemen conflict.
