On November 13, 2022, an IED initiated on İstiklal Avenue, in Beyoğlu District, in the center of the Turkish city of Istanbul. The IED, which was concealed in a backpack, was placed on a bench in front of a Mango retail store. Six people were killed in the blast and 81 more were injured. Following an investigation, the person who placed the IED at the scene was arrested, as well as another suspect who prepared it and assisted in the operation. The IED contained high explosives packed in a plastic casing, metal nail fragmentation, and an electrical initiation system. The investigation concluded the attack perpetrators were members of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party who entered Turkey from the Afrin area in northern Syria. In addition to the activities of the Kurdish PKK and People’s Defense Units in Istanbul, cells and IED workshops of the Islamic State and the Communist Party of Turkey/Marxist-Leninist were also uncovered in the city in recent months.
