Mobius report 93/2023 – Magnetic Field Sensor Booby Trap Mechanism with Self-Destruct Feature, Ukraine

During December 2023, extensive documentation of PTM-3 mines targeting Russian forces, ostensibly laid using UAVs, started to appear in the Ukrainian arena. The mines were modified for initiation using an electronic mechanism, which has a magnetic field sensor that initiates the mine when the magnetic field changes or is disturbed.

Concurrently, the use of this mechanism was also documented with an improvised bomblet for release from an armed UAV, and in a booby-trapped walkie-talkie.

The electronic mechanism, which has an arming delay as well as a self-destruct function, also has a magnetic field sensor main element that functions as a booby trap, and is therefore also a threat for first responders, bomb disposal technicians and mine clearing personnel, as well as agents engaged in gathering technical intelligence or forensic evidence.
