Drone operators in combat zones encounter various challenges related to signal jamming or more advanced methods of GPS spoofing. In July 2023, a team of anonymous Russian hackers announced the development of PCBs designed to protect UAVs from the GPS spoofing that are compatible with various DJI UAV models. Since then, instructions and manuals for their use have been widely distributed on Russian Telegram channels. Additionally, a specific firmware was developed for Russian forces using civilian drones on the battlefield, with the latest update being issued in June 2024. On the Ukrainian side, similar technologies have been developed and actively used.
Spoofing is the replacement of the GPS signal transmitted by satellites with a stronger signal broadcast from a ground station. In other words, the ground spoofing station substitutes the satellite signal and misleads the UAV about its actual location, which often leads to its loss. Anti-spoofing tools were designed to help the armed forces in the conflict zone by giving UAVs the ability to perform tasks in adverse conditions – to bypass limitations, thereby avoiding detection or interception.
