Since early 2024, fiber-optic drones have proliferated on the battlefield in the ongoing Russo-Ukrainian war.
Fiber-optic drones, also referred to as wire-guided drones, differ from the common drone presently deployed in that they are guided through an optical fiber cable rather than wireless communication. This design makes them resistant to electronic warfare, though they carry smaller payloads, have shorter ranges and are more expensive.
While Russia led the development of fiber-optic drones, Ukraine has quickly closed the gap. Now both sides are deploying them in large numbers for the first time.
