On December 31, 2024, Project Masam’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) experts successfully neutralized a PBIED found in Al-Dhale Province, Yemen. The PBIED was fitted with a double initiation system: a primary system for initiation by a suicide bomber and a secondary RC receiver, used as a backup system for remote activation by another handler if necessary. PBIEDs with a double initiation system that incorporate an RC system for backup are uncommon, especially in Yemen.
Though no organization has been linked to the PBIED found in Al-Dhale, the recent use of this TTP in Yemen is noteworthy and poses a challenge to both local and international security forces, as well as to EOD technicians. It requires heightened alertness and consideration of all possible scenarios when handling such devices.
