Mobius report 19/2026 – ELN Use of “Road-Patch” Concealment for Underbelly IEDs, Colombia

The recent discovery of multiple underbelly IEDs along the Tame–Arauca road corridor in Arauca Department, eastern Colombia, revealed the use of a modified concealment technique by the National Liberation Army (ELN). In several incidents, IEDs were buried in cavities excavated in the center of the roadway, after which the surface was resealed with fresh asphalt to resemble routine road repairs. Locally referred to as “reparcheo” (“patching”), this method allows the emplacement site to blend into damaged or frequently repaired road surfaces, complicating visual detection during route-clearance operations.
