In recent months, we have tracked a number of incidents involving the use of IEDs prepared by forces opposing military rule in Myanmar. Prominent among these was the emergence of high-quality omnidirectional fragmentation IEDs in two incidents documented in May and September 2021. In addition, various IEDs with different fragmentation configurations have been employed successfully in attacks against targets. Documentation of the neutralized IEDs and the attack scenes points to an increase in the use of IEDs with a more effective configuration, compared to the simple pipe IEDs with practically no fragmentation hitherto witnessed across the country.
The development of the production technology of the IED-makers is not surprising given the resolve of the popular armed struggle against the military junta, and the indisputable involvement of veteran armed groups in the country.
