Mobius report 3/2022 – Loitering Munition Attacks Mark the Anniversary of the Assassination of Qasem Soleimani, Iraq

On January 3, 2022, the second anniversary of the assassination of Qasem Suleimani, commander of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps’ Quds Force, there was a series of attacks incorporating loitering munitions and rocket fire by Iran-backed Shiite militias against US forces stationed near Baghdad International Airport, and Ayn al-Asad Air Force Base, in Al-Anbar Governorate, northwest of Baghdad, in central Iraq. Two different models of loitering munitions were used to attack the two targets.

While those used to attack the Ayn al-Asad Air Base were similar to models known from various arenas in which Iran-backed forces operate, another model documented after the Baghdad Airport attack is known exclusively from Iraq. This is a relatively new model that has thus far been documented in several attacks against US targets in Iraq during 2021.
