On December 13, 2021, security forces in Myanmar raided a house that served as a hiding place for the underground armed group known as Generation Z Power, in the Mandalay Region of central Myanmar, claiming the group was involved in the assassination of innocent civilians. In the hideout, which may also have served as a production site and an operations base, a large quantity of IEDs, raw materials for the production of homemade explosives, IED components and components for RC initiation systems were seized. Among the initiation system components were intact, unmodified commercial transmitters and receivers, as well as receivers based on commercial components that had been modified to optimize their use with IEDs. Similar models of RC initiation systems were recently documented in use by People’s Defense Force operatives in other parts of the country. The diversity of initiation systems used by armed groups in Myanmar has increased significantly in the last two months, with the introduction of numerous makes and models of commercial systems that were rapidly tried and tested, and are now incorporated in IED initiation systems.
