Mobius Report – IEDs Used in Assassinations, Albania

On January 7, 2022, an RCIED was initiated on a moving vehicle in Unaza E Re, in Tirana, capital of Albania. A known criminal and another passenger were injured in the blast. On December 8, 2021, Albanian police seized two RCIEDs intended for use in an assassination attempt in Tirana. On September 3, 2021, an RCIED was initiated under a vehicle belonging to a police officer in the Albanian city of Durrës. And on March 11, 2021, an IED was initiated under a prosecutor’s vehicle while parked in a commercial center in Tirana, following which, additional RCIEDs intended for sale were seized.

In recent years, the black market in Albania for trade in IEDs has been thriving, with dozens of IEDs “for sale” on the black market, intended for use in both local and European arenas, many seized in a number of undercover police operations. The most prominent of these IEDs are small RCIEDs used in assassination attacks, mainly mobile phone-based, using standard, military and civilian explosives from various sources.
