During December 2021, there were two separate incidents involving attempted attacks on courts in India by criminals. The first case, on December 9, 2021, was a failed attempt to assassinate a lawyer, motivated by revenge, at Rohini Court in New Delhi. The second, on December 23, 2021, was a work accident suffered by a former drug dealer apparently while he was engaged in assembling an IED in the restroom on the second floor of Ludhiana Court in Punjab.
In the last two years, there have been a number of attacks and attempted attacks on courts by criminal elements, some motivated by revenge, others aimed at undermining stability in the area where the attack took place. Attacking courthouses is a global trend that has existed for years, occasionally involving terrorist organizations, but mostly criminal groups. There has been a notable escalation in both the TTPs and IEDs used in these attacks recently, even when they are carried out by criminals. In addition, there are terrorist organizations that may exploit individuals with personal motives to attack courts because it also serves the interest of organizations interested in undermining security stability in the area where the attack takes place.
