On February 23, 2022, the Lebanese Interior Ministry announced it had thwarted a complex suicide bombing attack by a Palestinian Islamic State cell from the Ain al-Hilweh refugee camp in southern Lebanon targeting Hezbollah religious centers in Beirut. According to the report, preparations for the attack were made as early as 2021, planned and directed by an Islamic State operative from Syria. A Palestinian IS cell from the Ain al-Hilweh refugee camp was entrusted with delivering the IEDs to a collection point south of Beirut. An undercover agent from the Lebanese Internal Security Forces infiltrated the cell and was selected to be one of the participating operatives in the terrorist attack plan. This enabled Lebanese security forces to seize the IEDs from the drop point and in mid-February 2022, they arrested the Palestinian cell that planned the attacks.
