In the course of the passing year, there have been several attempts to attack Ivorian military and gendarmerie forces with underbelly IEDs of identical configurations, fitted with pressure plate initiation systems. In addition, on April 29, 2021, Ivorian security forces reportedly recovered a booby-trapped AK magazine. Altogether, these incidents mark the first documented cases of IEDs and initiation systems in the country, against the backdrop of an increase in successfully executed attacks. The location of the incidents, in proximity to the borders with Burkina Faso and Ghana, attest to the shift of jihadist trends, mainly skillful combatants and creative TTPs, from the countries of the Sahel, which for the better part of the passing decade, has known fierce battles between Al-Qaeda and Islamic State-affiliated jihadi groups for regional dominance.
