On February 3, 2022, a number of 122 mm rockets were fired from the Al-Saha neighborhood in Mosul at a Turkish base known as Zilkan Camp, located near Bashiqa, in northern Iraq. According to reports, all the rockets fell outside the confines of the base. The Shiite militia “Ahrar Sinjar” claimed responsibility for the attack. Inside the truck on which the launchers were mounted, two jerrycan IEDs connected to an initiation system placed outside the truck was found. We estimate this is a self-destruct mechanism designed to destroy the cabin of the truck. This is the first time an IED has been documented inside a truck concealing a rocket fire platform in Iraq specifically to destroy the platform – a trend recently identified in the country.
