On March 20, 2022, bomb disposal officers from the Afrin Security Directorate, which is subordinate to the Syrian National Police and General Security Forces, neutralized an IED found in a residential area in the city of Afrin, in Aleppo Governorate, in northwestern Syria. The IED, which was hidden in a plastic bag and was ready for use, was packed in a metal casing with a unique configuration tailored specifically for the IED, and was connected to an improvised electronic delay timer. The initiation system is known to be used by armed Kurdish organizations – the People’s Defense Units and the Kurdistan Workers’ Party – in Syria and Turkey. The system is extremely small-sized and it has been documented in several incidents in the abovementioned areas in the past year. It is part of the extensive arsenal of improvised initiation systems of armed groups in the area, which includes a number of models that are constantly being improved and upgraded that after many years of operation, have attained a high quality.
