TGA0686 – Unwitting VBIED Drivers, Colombia

On February 9, 2022, at 5:20 PM, a three-wheeled cargo motorcycle VBIED was initiated at the entrance to a military garrison in Meta, in the Colombian municipality of Granada, leaving two people dead – a soldier and a civilian, and seven others injured. The VBIED was driven by an unwitting local delivery man, familiar to the security guards on the base, who believed he was delivering fruit to soldiers confined to base. Unbeknownst to him, an IED had been added to the fruit package, essentially turning his cargo motorcycle into a VBIED.

The attack was attributed to a FARC dissident known as Alexander Díaz Mendoza, aka Calarcá, from the Jorge Briceño 7th Front, which operates under the direction of Miguel Botache Santillana, aka Gentil Duarte, a former FARC commander and a senior leader of the FARC dissidents in the south and east of the country.
