On May 18, 2022, a video was posted on the WarGonzo Telegram channel, demonstrating the use of an RGD-5 grenade as ammunition for an armed UAV against enemy targets was posted by soldiers from the 61st Marine Brigade of the Russian Army’s Northern Fleet.
The method shown to adapt the grenade for use as improvised ammunition dispensed from an armed drone is unique, and incorporates a cut syringe body to release the grenade lever.
The use of hand grenades as improvised ammunition for armed drones is a growing trend in the Ukrainian arena as these weapons are one of the most common items available to every soldier. When using hand grenades as armed drone ammunition, various simple, improvised methods for utilizing the grenade fuze as an initiation system after the grenade has been released from the UAV have been documented in this arena.
