During 2022, particularly between March and May, EOD personnel from the Yemeni Armed Forces and deminers from civilian mine-clearing organizations in Yemen neutralized a large number of bounding mines in the country. Bounding mines have been in service in Yemen for several years, but the use of these mines has increased since the beginning of the current year in a number of areas from which Houthi forces have withdrawn in recent months, especially in Al-Hodeidah, Shabwah and Marib governorates. The Houthi bounding mines, which appear to be copies of standard items, have also been documented in larger dimensions than the copied standard munition item, and now appear in three different sizes weighing between hundreds of grams to about 10 kilograms. The bounding mines are connected to one of several possible initiation systems, both mechanical and electrical, including RC. The emergence of these new weapons continues the Houthi trend of their industrial production of mines and IEDs, with the aim of enhancing the effectiveness and capabilities of the weapons in their arsenals, in terms of the extent of damage, preventing detection and delaying the advance of enemy forces.
