Mobius report – IED Workshop Raided, Istanbul, Turkey

On the evening of April 27, 2022, Turkish security forces raided an apartment that served as both a hideout and an IED workshop in Sancaktepe, a suburb in eastern Istanbul, the largest city in Turkey, located in the northwest of the country. Approximately 5 kg of raw materials for the production of homemade explosives were found in the apartment, as well as initiation systems and components for IEDs at various stages of assembly. Among the systems documented were some uncommon items, including an air freshener ostensibly intended for use as a delay element for an IED initiation system, and a wireless motion sensor alarm, which could be used to initiate a VOIED. The discovery of the IED workshop took place after the exposure of an alleged terrorist cell following two unusual attacks, one fatal, that took place during April 2022, in major cities in Turkey – Istanbul and Bursa – against Turkish government-related targets. The increased terrorist activity, by Kurdish-affiliated organizations, follows the recent resumption of Turkish military operations against the Kurdistan Workers’ Party in northern Iraq.
