Between April 30 and June 19, 2022, the Khin-U People Defense Force, a militia operating in Khin-U Township, in Sagaing Region, in northwestern Myanmar, released documentation of its operatives preparing a singular IED model. All of the preparation and assembly stages were shown, from preparing the casing from PVC pipe, through the preparation of the main charge explosive and booster, to assembling the final IED. An interesting feature that appeared in the documentation was the use of a conical liner on the front of the IED, presumably to form a shaped charge, for optimal damage effect to targets.
IEDs with directionally-focused warhead configurations began to appear in the Myanmar arena in early 2022, after months in which militants in the area refined and increased the number of IEDs in their possession to target military vehicles. The recent appearance of hollow charges, albeit still in the early stages of production, is a natural development and an additional step up in the production capabilities of the local militia fighters, whom we estimate will continue to develop and improve in the near future.
