On July 20, 2022, independent Burmese media published a video showing a weapons workshop operated by the armed militia Anti-Fascist Underground Revolution Front active in Kayin State, in southeastern Myanmar. In the workshop, a number of items produced by the group were presented, the most prominent of which were casings for Claymore-type mines and improvised hand grenades, in addition to improvised ammunition, such as mortar rounds and rockets. The casings for the improvised grenades and Claymore-type mines were produced using the molten metal casting technique, incorporating improvised molds of various types. The group also produces the improvised explosives used to fill the items, from raw materials. The manual production of casings of a variety of materials and designs for IEDs and improvised ammunition has become common among the many militias in Myanmar in the past year, but production methods of a more industrial nature involving casting metal into molds is not common in the arena, and was recently documented in use by only one other militia active in Kayah State, in the east of the country.
