Mobius 57/2022 – Production and Modification of Payload Release Systems for UAVs, Ukraine

Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, documentation has been published of Ukrainian entrepreneurs and engineers from three different cities using their skills to help produce UAV payload release systems, as well as to convert commercial UAVs into weapons of war. These efforts have been evidenced mainly in the collection of donations for the purpose of building the systems, distributing information and ways to communicate with them via official media channels and social networks, and managing orders and sending the final products to the units in the field. The experts and engineers are responsible for managing the assembly process and transferring knowledge to volunteers from fields of engineering participating in the process, both for the production of systems for small drones, and for large UAVs capable of carrying several mortar bomblets. These test cases demonstrate the importance of the experts and entrepreneurs, operating outside of the regular army structure and defense industry, who are raising funds channeled to assisting the war effort. Their cooperation and knowledge-sharing is noteworthy, as is their contribution to the continuous production and distribution of tools that are integrated into both the military tactics of the Ukrainian Army and the asymmetric combat methods of volunteer units that are not part of the military hierarchy.
