Mobius report 63/2022 – Booby-Trapped Motorcycle VBIED and IED Lure Scenes Targeting Security Forces, Myanmar

On July 27, 2022, the anti-junta Yesagyo Revolution Group claimed responsibility for an attack targeting security forces in the village of Kyaukhlaykhar, in Yesagyo, in Myanmar’s Magway Region, which took place earlier that same day. The attack TTP incorporated a motorcycle VBIED parked on a road near a local university, at the entrance to which security forces are stationed. Some time after it was parked at the scene, a police officer from the security position moved it closer to the post. When the officer lifted the seat of the motorcycle to inspect inside, an explosion occurred, which the group claimed resulted in the deaths of at least three police officers and soldiers. The group further claimed the scenario was planned in advance and incorporated a booby trap, and they published images showing the structure of the payload and the initiation system.

Concurrent with the continued use of underbelly and roadside IEDs for targeting military vehicles, militants in Myanmar are experimenting with various complex attack scenarios for targeting security forces, which thus far have mainly incorporated fake IEDs to lure troops to an arena. The event in Yesagyo is the first confirmed incident of a motorcycle VBIED was in Myanmar, and combined with the use of an anti-lift booby trap, is among the most unique and complex of the IED events that have occurred in the country to date.
