Mobius report 72/2022 – Iranian Delta-Wing Loitering Munitions Used by Russia in Ukraine

On September 25, 2022, four loitering munitions were launched toward the city of Odesa, which lies on the shores of the Black Sea, in southwestern Ukraine. Three of them impacted an administrative building used by the Ukrainian Army’s Operational Command South, and another was intercepted by anti-aircraft systems. The incident was preceded by another attack two days earlier, on September 23, 2022, when six loitering munitions attacked the city of Odesa for the first time. Two of them hit buildings in the port area of the city, resulting in the death of one civilian. In addition, on the same day, at least three more UAVs were intercepted in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast, in southern Ukraine. Documentation of the remains of the UAVs indicates they are Delta-wing loitering munitions manufactured in Iran. The appearance of these UAVs in Ukraine is the first documented use of loitering munitions from the Delta-wing family manufactured by Iran outside of the Middle East and the Gulf region, with various modifications that apparently make them suitable for use by the Russian military.
