TGA0708 – USV WBIED Washes Ashore in Sevastopol, Crimea, Russia

For the first time in the Black Sea, what appears to be an unmanned surface vessel serving as a water-borne IED was documented near Sevastopol. The vessel was found drifting toward the shore and incorporated components that resemble sensors, camera, an antenna and two impact fuses in the bow of the vessel. Judging from its appearance, the vessel does not appear to be of standard production and is smaller than unmanned explosive boats seen in other arenas. While it is unknown how the vessel reached the shores of Sevastopol (a fairly long distance from possible Ukrainian deployment spots,) the Ukrainian military has demonstrated impressively long range strike abilities. Additionally, the Ukrainians have evidenced some well documented improvisations for weaponized commercial-off-the-shelf UAVs, and have also expressed a keen interest in USVs and their military utilization, as part of the Ukrainian Navy’s asymmetric combat strategy.
