On September 21, 2022, the Iran-aligned Ansar Allah Movement (the Houthis) unveiled, for the first time, during a military parade in Sanaa, two types of bottom naval mines, designated “Masjur.” According to the Houthis’ claims, the bottom mines are based on Soviet bottom naval mines – the AMD-1-500 and the DM-1. The Houthis also revealed a previously unseen class of unmanned surface vessel serving as a water-borne IED. This USV WBIED is part of a series designated by the Houthis “Tufan” class vessels. The Tufan-1 class is slower, smaller in dimensions, and carries a smaller warhead than its predecessors and is intended for near-shore combat operations. The displayed weapons demonstrate the continued progress of the Houthis’ military capabilities in general and specifically, the growing maritime threat they pose in the Red Sea, and to the vital, strategic Bab al-Mandab Strait.
