On August 13, 2022, an IED initiated on 10th and H Street, in Cristo del Consuelo, in the south of the Ecuadorian port city of Guayaquil. Five people were killed and 23 were injured, two seriously. In addition, eight homes, four cars and a motorcycle were damaged. A total of 117 people were reportedly affected by the attack.
A crater measuring 1.6 m wide, and 36-40 cm deep was formed by the blast. The explosion generated a shock wave of 60-70 meters.
The attack was allegedly carried out by two men riding a motorcycle, who threw or placed a sack containing the IED outside a small restaurant in the Cristo del Consuelo neighborhood, according to eyewitness accounts. Some residents say they heard gunshots before the blast.
