Mobius report 90/2022 – Man-Portable Counter-UAS in Combat Zones

Man-Portable Counter-Unmanned Aerial Systems (counter-UAS) were first introduced in the previous decade, mainly as countermeasures used by close security details, and for the protection of major events and strategic infrastructure. However, evidence has shown that with the growing threat of weaponized commercial UAVs in recent years, man-portable counter-UAS are becoming increasingly common in various zones of conflict in the Middle East, and more recently, in the Russian-Ukrainian war. These weapons have several advantages over other means of interception, which usually involve high fire rate autocannons or machineguns, as they are direct energy weapons that suppress UAV control channels and satellite navigation signals. It is likely the involvement of such countermeasures in modern warfare will grow in accordance with the rising challenges posed by the increasing use of commercial UAVs and improvised weaponized UAVs by armies and militants.
