On November 1, 2022, the Security Service of Ukraine detained an alleged Russian military intelligence agent, who was preparing IED attacks on the Odesa railroad. The agent’s preparation process was thorough – he changed his appearance several times, possessed fake Ukrainian documents and, most interestingly, set up two remote trail cameras near the railroad, which allowed him to surveil the area from his mobile phone.
The use of trail cameras is becoming more common by both sides on the battlefield in Ukraine. The modification of these devices to initiate IEDs has not yet been documented. However, the potential threat is clear, as new warfare techniques using everyday items are developing rapidly in the ongoing war.
