Since 2014, two Chechen battalions have been operating in Ukraine on the side of the Ukrainian forces, namely, the Johar Dudayev Battalion and the Sheikh Mansur Battalion. Since the Russian invasion in February 2022, the battalions have fought against Russian forces, but the Sheikh Mansur Battalion has especially demonstrated its capabilities with a variety of improvisations and modifications to standard weapons. Some of these are familiar improvisations from the wars in Chechnya, and in Ukraine before the Russian invasion, and some are improvisations that characterize the current war. Among the improvised weapons are personal PBIEDs, and improvised arming for a shoulder-fired RPG. The use of PBIEDs is new in the Ukrainian arena, while the use of other improvised items may indicate a specific lack or prioritization of ordnance items among the ranks of the Chechen Sheikh Mansur Battalion.
