Mobius report 8/2023 – Innovative Claymore-type Mine Production, Myanmar

During December 2022, and January 2023, an armed militia operating in Magway Region, in western Myanmar, published documentation of dozens of Claymore-type mines manufactured by the group’s operatives, in addition to other improvised weapons, such as mortars and mortar rounds, rockets and various improvised ammunition. The Claymore-type mines were cased in PVC pipes molded in identical designs to the desired shape, with a high level of uniformity, and a finish that indicates the existence of proper equipment, sufficient funding and above all, the skills and experience of the IED-makers, tasked with improving the performance of this weapon in the field. Since an instructional guide to assembling a Claymore-type mine from PVC was distributed on social networks associated with the armed struggle in Myanmar in late 2021, a large number of militias have experimented with preparing these IEDs from PVC and other materials, in several different designs. Over time, it has become evident the militants are gaining experience and perfecting their production methods, and are producing IEDs with more interesting and effective designs, which can pose a greater threat to security forces in the country.
