On February 25, 2023, three explosions occurred during the 28th Race of Hope Marathon, held in the city of Buea, at three different locations along the route. As a result, one person was killed and at least 19 others were injured. The Ambazonia Defence Forces claimed responsibility for the attacks, stressing they intended to target military and police forces securing the event, and expressed regret for the civilian injuries, although at least one of the IEDs was a directional fragmentation charge aimed directly at the athletes.
