On February 24, 2023, two improvised grenades were thrown at the Yala Special Operations Group 1 Task Force base (Yala 1) located along Highway 4082 in the vicinity of Ban Pooyani, Village No. 3, in Sateng Nok Subdistrict, Muang District, in southern Thailand’s Yala Province. One of the grenades initiated inside the base, near the perimeter fence, while another was found intact near the flagpole as a UXO. The spherical grenades are a new, improved model of a series of improvised grenades prepared by militants in southern Thailand over the years. In recent years, these grenades have been documented fitted with a short electronic delay mechanism.
The grenades are mainly used in hit-and-run TTPs to target small bases and outposts of Thai security forces and volunteer Ranger units.
In the past few years, changes have been made to the structure of the improvised grenades, to optimize the grenade effect and significantly increase reliability of operation, but there is still room for improvement.
