On February 23, 2023, a small boat smuggling weapons from Iran to Yemen was interdicted off the coast of Oman by a British Royal Navy frigate. Components for missiles, passive electro-optical surveillance systems, and seven Iranian Dehlavieh anti-tank guided missiles, including new, long range AT and thermobaric models, were seized.
The interception of the Iranian vessel marks a continuation of the trend of persistent attempts to smuggle various types of weapons from Iran to the Houthi forces in Yemen, via land and sea, some more successful and some less so, which has been ongoing for years. Recent documentation by the Houthis points to what appears to be a not insignificant number of successes in the transfer of new advanced weapons that originate in Iran.
