On the evening of March 11, 2023, an IED was discovered attached to a vehicle parked outside a private residence in Mayo District, in Pattani Province, in southern Thailand. The small IED, tied under the front part of the vehicle, was successfully neutralized the following morning, at which time, it was discovered to be connected to a radio-based RC initiation system with an improvised DTMF decoder. Incidents involving IEDs planted under vehicles for use in tailored assassinations are extremely rare in southern Thailand, and very few have been documented in recent years. This is particularly notable against the background of the numerous IED incidents in this part of the country, including roadside and under vehicle IEDs, in addition to thrown improvised grenades. Based on the characteristics of the IEDs that can be identified in the scant documentation that exists, it is possible to tie them to known IED-makers used by the veteran militant groups that have been operating in the area for several years, and who probably only employ this TTP against selected targets involved in activities that interfere with their activities, and not as a main attack TTP against the focal targets of the militant organizations – security forces in southern Thailand.
