On March 27, 2023, two multiple IED attacks targeted electrical/communications infrastructure in different areas of Yangon Region in southern Myanmar. At both scenes, the militants used IEDs with similar initiation systems – a time delay module board and a commercial RC receiver board, in addition to arming switches. This unique combination of systems has only been documented in the southern Myanmar arena once before, and it is notable against the background of the frequent use by militants throughout the country of commercial receivers of a similar type for the RC initiation of various types of IEDs against a variety of targets. The use of the familiar RC systems with the commercial delay timer, which in itself is not at all common in the arena, is a unique combination that may be a characteristic of a local manufacturer, and is intended to allow the more sophisticated and efficient initiation of IEDs, using several arming switches.
