Mobius report 29/2023 – Directional Fragmentation IEDs, Southern Thailand

On April 18, 2023, an IED was found and later neutralized near Moo No. 6 in the Ban Chue Nga area of Mueang Narathiwat District, in southern Thailand’s Narathiwat Province.

The IED was connected to an initiation system cased in a plastic box that contained a radio with DTMF, batteries and switches. The main charge explosive was cased in a cut gas cylinder filled with explosives, at the bottom of which, a layer of fragmentation was externally attached. The IED was configured as a directional fragmentation charge. DFCs were not common in Thailand before now, and it seems, as of the time of writing, this is the latest in a series of incidents that involved the use or recovery of such an IED, which appears to be an emerging trend in Thailand’s southern provinces.
