On April 3, 2023, a victim operated IED in the form of a booby-trapped home theater system, gifted anonymously as a wedding present, initiated in a house in Chamari village, in the Kabir Dham District of Chhattisgarh State, in central India, killing four people and injuring several others. The VOIED was an anonymous gift from the bride’s ex-boyfriend. The attack had been preceded by threats against the bride and groom. The explosion occurred as soon as the home theater system was connected to the electricity and switched on.
This incident is unusual in that the IED did not initiate when the gift was opened, but only when it was plugged in and switched on. Additionally, the damage caused by the blast was greater than in previous incidents incorporating VOIEDs camouflaged as gifts. This TTP of booby-trapping an electrical device for initiation when plugged in to a domestic power source and switched on is uncommon. The sophistication demonstrated in this incident makes it difficult for the victim to recognize the danger inherent in the electrical device, especially when the item appears new and intact. Criminals and terrorists may try to imitate this TTP in the future, which will pose an even greater challenge for the various attack targets.
