During the past year, following an increase in Naxalite activity in their main areas of operation, and subsequent raids by security forces, numerous documentation of IEDs and IED components used by the Naxalites, particularly in the states of Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand, has been published. Concurrently, IED attacks in these areas have increased in the past year, and although security forces were mainly targeted in these attacks, quite a few civilians were also injured. The Naxalite IEDs are usually small to medium in size, with simple initiation systems, such as command-wire, or improvised booby traps. Recently, there have been incidents of large underbelly IEDs planted under roads with remotely controlled initiation systems, resulting in increased and numerous casualties.
