On May 3, 2023, the Federal Security Service of the Russian Federation announced they had prevented an assassination attempt they claimed was organized by the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, targeting the governor of the Russian-annexed, but internationally unrecognized Republic of Crimea, and several other Russian administrative officials. In addition, according to the FSB, transport infrastructure on the Crimean Peninsula was another target of the same terror cell.
IED components, concealed in different ways, were transferred to Crimea using a complicated scheme involving many people, both Russian and Ukrainian citizens. In order to transfer the items required for the attacks, the cell used a Russian online marketplace, which helped to eliminate direct contact between the members of the cell.
