On November 30, 2022, a rickshaw SVBIED rammed into a police truck escorting a polio vaccination team in Quetta, Balochistan, killing four people and wounding more than 30. Tehreek-e-Taliban-e-Pakistan claimed responsibility for the attack, which occurred just two days after the launch of a polio vaccination campaign in Pakistan.
During the last decade, the TTP has made it their goal to impede the Pakistani government’s attempts to eradicate polio, mainly based on conspiracy theories on the subject, and for this reason, polio remains endemic in Pakistan. Over the years, many terrorist attacks by the Pakistani Taliban have been documented, using different attack TTPs, mostly carried out shortly before or after the launch of a polio vaccination campaign in the country. Security teams assigned to protect the vaccination teams do not deter the organization because these forces are one of their main targets anyway. With the mounting strengthening of the TTP in Pakistan, the targeting of vaccination teams and their security escorts is expected to continue and even increase.
