On July 4, 2023, Ansar al-Sharia, aka Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, published a video featuring attacks by the group from the past year, targeting UAE-backed forces more commonly known as the Southern Transitional Council and Security Belt Forces. The video shows the tactical use of lure attacks, complex attacks involving multiple IEDs to target a two-vehicle patrol in a single attack, and the targeting of first responders or evacuation vehicles. Furthermore, it shows AQAP has intensified its weaponized UAV activity, with different types of improvised ammunition, as well as combined armed UAV and land based IED attacks.
The documentation of IEDs used by AQAP in Yemen in the past year indicates the reuse of IEDs and initiation systems, items similar to those seized in various operations, concurrent with the improvement of the configuration of the IEDs and initiation systems, mainly RC, used by the organization.
